James Tobin is the author of several books of history and biography, including The Man He Became, the story of Franklin Roosevelt’s struggle to overcome polio, and Ernie Pyle’s War, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in biography. Other writings include books for children and scores of articles about the history of his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in history. A longtime journalist, he teaches writing at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
